Christchurch City’s $250m “Green Frame” is complete!

Christchurch – the invigorated, green city that is now even more pedestrian friendly.

What is the Green Frame?

This project was priced at $4,000 per metre and the beautiful spaces are testament to this value. The 8 year project is divided into 3 components – which together create a ‘Frame’- that allows easy routes for commuting through the city on foot, by bike or scooter. Not only is the route easy through the city, it is a stretch that has been revitalised with feature artworks, green planting and widened footpaths to roam.

The South Frame

The South Frame is a 1km stretch from Tuam Street to St Asaph Street running east to west.

The Ford dealership that sits on this route was on board with this project and allowed for their site to be included in the walkway: you walk under the heritage roof of their building.

Beautiful landscaping lines both sides of the stretch along with curated artworks.

This was the final section to be complete.

Avon River Promenade

Connecting the Christchurch Hospital to the Margaret Mahy Playground this component of the Green Frame is an essential commuting route for many. The Christchurch City hospital is the South Islands’ largest employer and it is exciting to see a city that makes this so accessible. Following the Avon River, this stretch boasts riverside views and access to bars and restaurants.

East Frame

Stretching from the new residential zone from Gloucester Street to Lichfield Street this section connects the Avon River Promenade to Rauora Park.

The park is open to the public and has been a space that has really come to life with activity and city dwellers in these warm months.
