New Zealand Financial Support for First Home Buyers

Below, we briefly introduce some of the Financial Support options available in New Zealand to help First Home Buyers into their first home.

 

First Home Grant

Description: The First Home Grant is available for first home buyers to help with putting together a deposit for their first home. 

Available to: First Home Buyers, Previous Home Owners (if asset cap conditions are met)

Income Caps: Yes

House Price Caps: Yes

Other Conditions: You must live in the home for 6 months minimum

 

First Home Loan

Description: A First Home Loan is designed for first home buyers who can afford to make regular repayments on a home loan, but have trouble saving for a deposit.

Available to: First Home Buyers, Previous Home Owners (if asset cap conditions are met)

Income Caps: Yes

House Price Caps: Yes

Other Conditions: You must live in the home for life of the loan

 

KiwiSaver first-home withdrawal

Description: The KiwiSaver first-home withdrawal allows you to withdraw your savings from your KiwiSaver scheme to put towards the purchase of a home.

Available to: Previous Home Owners (if asset cap conditions are met)

Income Caps: No

House Price Caps: No

Other Conditions: The KiwiSaver provider decides on the withdrawal conditions

 

Kāinga Ora First Home Partner

Description: The KiwiSaver first-home withdrawal allows you to withdraw your savings from your KiwiSaver scheme to put towards the purchase of a home.

Available to: First Home Buyers, Previous Home Owners (if asset cap conditions are met)

Income Caps: Yes

House Price Caps: No

Other Conditions: Kāinga Ora’s maximum equity in the property will be the lower of $200,000; or 25% of the purchase price

 

Kāinga Whenua 

Description: A guide to lending for housing on multiple-owned Māori Land.

Available to: First Home Buyers, Previous Home Owners (if asset cap conditions are met), Current Home Owners

Income Caps: No

House Price Caps: No

Other Conditions: The dwelling must be on multiple owned Maori land.
